overnight on the daily cal website showing how intense that fire became. five people were living in a duplex. they all got out safely including a woman in a wheelchair who had to be helped out by police. four homes surrounding this one were also evacuated as a precaution. those people have been allowed back in except for the family of five that is homeless this morning. firefighters in the meantime are evaluating the damage. >> during the firefight, there was a collapse of the roof and second floor which resulted in us backing out of the building and fighting the fire defensively. this is where we put our ladder trucks and spray water from the temperatures to of the roof and hose lines into the windows -- water from the tops of the roof and hose lines into the windows. >> reporter: part of the roof collapsed falling on the first story. but firefighters pulled back before that happened. nobody was hurt. now, there was some talk that maybe a propane tank may have been involved in starting this fire. firefighters will not confirm that this morning. they say once they're sure all the hot spots a

for the daily cal when the fire was al full bore between midnight and 2 a.m. at one point the firefighters were inside, the second story was collapsing on them. they had to get out and fight it from the outside. i'm here with deputy fire chief. tell me about that moment when you started to realize that the structure's integrity was being compromised. >> so when the firefighters were inside the outside incident commander was evaluating the structure and saw the heavy amount of flames that were shooting out of the building and that's when they realized that there was going to be a collapse of the second story of the roof structure. so we went defensive spreading the water from the top of our ladder pipe in from the outside into the windows. that's what we call a defensive fire. >> reporter: when you're looking for hot spots, there's a lot of voids you say that hot spots could be hiding. >> with the collapse of the structure, the second floor, it's creating void spots that we can't get to the fire. so there's small hidden hotspots that we're trying to get to. we'll be here all morning waiting for

their car shot up in mexico city. the shooters as you mentioned mechanics cal federal police officers. now reports that investigators believe the shooting may have been a targeted assassination attempt by officers loyal to one of mexico's brutal drug cartels. a u.s. official telling the "associated press" that the evidence is, quote, pretty dam strong, that the officers that shot at the u.s. embassy vehicle were tied to organized crime. mexico, of course, a very important u.s. ally so obviously there is a lot of sensitivity regarding this. the state department not commenting publicly. the mexican government says it is cooperating, working with the f.b.i. who is leading the investigation. 12 mexican officers have been detained, they are being held on house arrest. this was the third time in the last two years, jenna, that american personnel have been targeted and shot in mexico. as we get more we'll pass it along to you. jenna: what a story, rick, thank you. gregg: tonight's presidential debate in denver is putting a key swing state squarely in the spotlight. president obama holds a slight
